In this context a ceremony is a performative act, in which we do our best to establish the solemnity or seriousness of the commitment of a human actor.
We do not refer to tradition with regard to this definition. A ceremony need not have history, though the social context and weight of the event is often of great help in establishing the validity of the pledge or commitment.
# Embodiment A good ceremony is embodied. It is face-to-face, and physical. When we are required to perform a ceremony online, we can learn much from theatre, and psychology in our attempt to embody the process.
# Video
Video is helpful in capturing the ceremony. More important than the act of documentation is the performative, and emotive gestalt
of the medium. Film is a good medium to capture the authenticity of the ceremony.
# Pledge An example of a ceremony in this definition of the term is that of Pledge, which is a tool or technique we use in order to establish the seriosnesss of a commitment.
# Technology
We use technology to craft new forms of ceremony, and in particular micro-ceremenies in which time and asynchronicity can be included. Prior to the application of technology ceremonies required public spaces and institutions to give them substance - these ceremonies were therefore by nature synchronous at a single physical location.
